ON SANITY AND CIVILIZATION: Why the easy way out fails!
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           CIVILIZATION, as the ancient Greeks knew, is the imposition of order upon chaos, chaos being The State of Nature.                                                                                                                                                                                             A basic law of science, is that an input of sufficient energy is necessary to maintain structure, characterized by order. The withdrawal of such energy results in the deterioration of structure into randomness, or chaos.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                CONSCIENCE is the mental structure appropriate to CIVILIZATION: conscience controls the dark, chaotic animal urges typical of Man prior to Civilization, in The State of Nature. Sigmund Freud called the source of such urges the "id" (the "it", or "beast").                                                                                                                                                                             Minds which lack conscience, lack order and structure appropriate to Civilization, and are therefore "insane", or "unsound":                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                THE ROMAN MAXIM, "Mens sana in sano corpore!" (A sound mind in a sound body!), accompanied the motto of the Roman Legions, "Per aspera ad astra!" (Through adversity to the stars!). The Romans knew that establishing sanity and order (Civilization), meant struggle, meaning hard work, i.e. an input of sufficient energy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         The "criminal way out" is the "easy way out". They steal it, from those who work to earn it! The mental structure necessary for real sanity is absent, not having been learned. Criminal minds are not only warped, but also insane. They are a virus in the body of society, which must do damage to survive. They do not belong. The absence of conscience ("superego"), enables them to unleash their violent animal urges ("id") upon the rest of us, and they think and act in those terms.                                                                                                                                                Note the modified use of the same aggressive energies, by those having conscience, to achieve goals appropriate to society.                                                                                                                                                       Civilized mind builds Civilization! Criminal mind damages Civilization so as to take what it wants for itself!
